Even if you've read the transcription, the original image may contain more clues as this 1940 census enumeration shows.

Some clerks and enumerators love the margins.

  1. Kind of like the 1940 Census Supplementary Questions. Bonus info on your ancestors! If your name happened to land on line 14 or 29, you got extra questions from the census taker. Like father's and mother's place of birth, which used to be a standard column in prior censuses. Also a few Veteran and SSI questions.

  2. On some French departmental archival images of the birth records from about the 1880s onward, a person's marriage & death were noted in the margins, if occurring in France... KMC
